The Good, The Bad, The Weird-좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈

The Good, The Bad, The Weird

Plot
In the 1930s, the world is in chaos. In Northeast Asia, the Korean Peninsula has fallen into the hands of the Japanese Imperialists. Many Koreans have flocked to Manchuria, the vast terrain of horses and wilderness bordering their homeland and China. Some of them, inevitably, have turned into mounted bandits to earn their living in this barren wasteland.

Tae-Gu (Song Kang-Ho) is a thief. He robs a train of Japanese military officers, but the incident is not as simple as it first seems. In the middle of this fierce gun battle against the Japanese, he obtains a mysterious map that leads to a treasure from the Qing Dynasty, buried somewhere in Manchuria.

Yet, the map is also sought by Chang-Yi (Lee Byung-Hun), the cold blooded hitman. Tae-Gu must fight not only the Japanese but also Chang-Yi and his fellow thugs, who happen to attack the train at the same time. At the end of this intense gunfight, a mysterious man jumps into the center of the battle from nowhere and rescues Tae-gu with astonishing gunplay. Having survived the battle, Tae-Gu thanks the man for saving his life. Yet, he does not know that this stranger is Do-Won (Jung Woo-Sung), the bounty hunter, who has been chasing Tae-Gu to turn him in for a reward. These three men - Do-Won (The Good), Chang-Yi (The Bad) and Tae-Gu (The Weird) - will soon discover that the map they are battling for is also a magnet that attracts others as diverse as the Korean resistance, Chinese/Russian/Korean mountain bandits and the Japanese army. The blazing gun battle in the train proves to be merely the beginning of the rollercoaster ride to the final showdown to come.

Up to one million people took to the streets

The biggest street protest in nearly three decades was held Saturday in the heart of Seoul with upwards of one million people calling for President Park Geun-hye to resign over an influence-peddling and abuse of power scandal involving her close friend.

As in previous candlelight vigils held on the past two Saturdays, people from all walks of life poured into the streets holding candles and banners that read “Park must resign!”

Organizers said the number of protesters in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square reached one million and ranged from parents with toddlers to senior adults with their sons and daughters. Police estimated the number of protestors to be 260,000.

Saturday’s rally was Korea’s biggest since June 26, 1987, when an estimated 1.4 million people protested nationwide against the authoritarian Chun Doo Hwan regime, demanding democracy. That massive rally helped force the Chun government to agree to direct presidential elections, and Korea has been an electoral democracy since.

It also surpassed the 2008 protest against U.S. beef imports, when an estimated 700,000 people took to the streets to protest the Lee Myung-bak administration.

The rally stretched from Gwanghwamun Gate to Seoul Station, or 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles). Approximately 100,000 people from outside Seoul came to take part.

Protestors were calling for the president to resign for giving unprecedented power over state affairs to one of her friends, Choi Soon-sil, even though she had no official position or expertise.

Many among the crowd said it was their first time protesting.

“I came out for the first time in my life out of frustration with President Park,” said Jung Seong-hee, 58. “I never expected to see a president who so blatantly violated the Constitution. I want her out of office immediately. She does not deserve the power she now exercises.”

“Who gave the power to President Park?” asked one high school student from a stage, “that she then gave to Choi Soon-sil?”

“We did!” the crowd cried.

Another protestor named Sarah Park, a 27-old company worker, told the Korea JoongAng Daily that she decided to join the rally because she wanted to show President Park and the political establishment that people care.

“I think it is important to make them feel pressure from our joint engagement to bring about change,” she said, “whether it be Park’s resignation or in other forms. I wanted to contribute to that joint effort to make it happen.”

A number of political heavyweights joined the protest, including former Minjoo Party Chairman Moon Jae-in and Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, both of whom are expected to run for president next year.

Leaders of all the opposition parties, as well as some lawmakers from the Saenuri Party, were seen at the protest.

“President Park must answer to the people who are out on the streets today,” said Moon, who competed against Park in the 2012 presidential campaign. “If she does not, an orderly exit for her will be impossible and state affairs will head toward collapse.”

]
The police dispatched 25,000 officers to the rally.

The Saturday protest was the third of its kind since the Choi scandal erupted.

Protestors were able to march in front of Gwanghwamun Gate near Gyeongbokgung Subway Station, which is less than one kilometer from the Blue House. It was the first time a demonstration at the venue came so close to the presidential residence. People were allowed to march to that point thanks to the Seoul Administrative Court’s decision earlier in the day to accept a request by the rally organizer to halt the police ban on the protest in such proximity to the Blue House.

In its decision to lift the ban on the protest at the intersection near the station, the court pointed out that the rally was not led by one particular interest group but was voluntarily organized by a variety of people.

“By not resorting to the strict interpretation of legal restraints on the rally,” said the court, “but instead allowing people to organize without restraint, we uphold the democratic principles of our country.”

The protest ran until around 3 a.m. Sunday, when police dissolved the remaining crowd facing a police line located on the road that directly leads to the presidential office. Minor scuffles between protestors and police occurred during the standoff but no major injuries were reported.

The massive rally has emboldened the opposition’s resolve in their demand that Park withdraw from all domestic and foreign affairs and let the National Assembly pick a new prime minister.

Some are calling on Park to lay out a timetable for her resignation so that a presidential election can take place earlier than Dec. 20 of next year. Under the Constitution, a by-presidential election must take place within 60 days of a presidential resignation.

Critics of the Park administration have demanded her immediate resignation so that a new election can be held within 60 days to elect her successor.

Another possible scenario is for lawmakers to impeach the president. To do that, a two-thirds parliamentary vote is required. The decision will then be deliberated on by the Constitutional Court.

Given the composition of the current National Assembly, in which three opposition parties command the loyalties of 165 lawmakers, the opposition bloc needs 35 votes from the ruling Saenuri Party.

Even if an impeachment is approved through the Assembly, it is possible for the Constitutional Court to strike it down, as it did in the 2004 impeachment against former President Roh Moo-hyun.

“The president should be on a path to impeachment in the name of the people,” said Kim Moo-sung, the former Saenuri chairman, during a party emergency meeting on Sunday. This marks a turnaround from his previous position, in which he disapproved of impeaching the president.

In response to the massive call for Park’s resignation, the Blue House said Sunday Park was “deeply aware of the gravity of the situation,” but did not elaborate on her next move.

Tens of thousands protest in South Korea, call for president to quit

Tens of thousands of South Koreans protested in central Seoul on Saturday in one the largest demonstrations in the country's capital for years, calling on embattled President Park Geun-hye to resign over a growing influence-peddling scandal.

Roughly 43,000 people were at the candle-lit rally early on Saturday evening, according to police. Organisers said a growing crowd of 100,000 had assembled, making the protest one of the biggest since demonstrations in 2008 against U.S. beef imports.

Park Geun-hye has been rocked by a scandal involving an old friend who is alleged to have used her closeness to the president to meddle in state affairs. Park has pledged to cooperate with prosecutors in an investigation.

Koreans have been angered by the revelations and say Park, the latest South Korean leader to be embroiled in a scandal involving family or friends, has betrayed public trust and mismanaged her government.

Her approval rating has slipped to just 5 percent according to a Gallup poll released on Friday, the lowest number for a South Korean president since such polling began in 1988.

Police said they had deployed 17,600 officers and 220 units including buses and mobile barriers to Saturday's protest.

Police in riot gear lined the alleys and streets leading to the presidential Blue House as the main body of the demonstration began the march through central Seoul.

Park has sacked many of her immediate advisers over the crisis. A former aide, Jeong Ho-seong, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of leaking classified information, a prosecution official told Reuters.

No South Korean president has ever failed to finish their five-year term, but Park has faced growing pressure from the public and political opponents to quit.

"Even though we're just students, we feel like we can't put up with this unreasonable society anymore so we're participating in this protest with like-minded friends," said Byun Woo-hyuk, an 18-year-old high school student holding a banner calling on the president to resign.

‘Wallis Simpson was not an evil gold-digging harlot… she was weak, vulnerable, lonely and terrified’

SHE was the brash, flirtatious US socialite who scandalised English society in
the 1930s.
Wallis Simpson has become one of the most demonised women in British history
after King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry her in 1936 – but
she is also one of the most fascinating.
Seventy-five years on, Wallis has cropped up in The King’s Speech and now
Madonna has written and directed new movie W.E. about her.
And a new book by biographer Anne Sebba sheds fresh light on the Duchess of
Windsor.
Here, Anne explains why it might be time for us to reconsider our opinion of
the King’s mistress.

IT’S hard to imagine a more hated woman in the 20th Century than Wallis
Simpson.
She has been accused of being a Nazi spy, gold-digging adventuress and a
prostitute who learned exotic skills in the sing-song houses and brothels of
China.
Schoolchildren in the late 1930s chanted a playground rhyme: “Hark the herald
angels sing, Mrs Simpson’s pinched our King,” without a clue as to what the
words meant.

And that’s the view that has lasted until today.
Wallis Simpson was vilified as an evil seductress, a Yankee harlot who had
been through two husbands already yet who nonetheless set her sights on
luring a third – the handsome young King of England – away
from his throne.
Since she was not very beautiful and, at almost 40, no longer young, she must
have bewitched him with some extraordinary sexual techniques she learnt
while travelling, alone, in China in the 1920s. It is rumoured she perfected
a skill called the Shanghai Squeeze.
This version of the story assumes Edward was an inexperienced bachelor who had
never had a girlfriend.
In fact, by the time he hit 40, he had had dozens of girlfriends –
often older married women.
When he was on world tours his staff often despaired of getting him to arrive
at meetings on time if he could not drag himself away from the woman he had
been enjoying the night before. This year has seen an explosion of interest
in the story, partly because it’s the 75th year since the abdication –
a good time to look back before all the participants are dead.

But also there have been several radio and television programmes about Wallis,
mostly not kind.
Any Human Heart – a fictional portrayal – saw her as truly
evil while the Oscar-winning The King’s Speech has only one scene with
Wallis, but it says everything there is to know.
Wallis is wearing a sexy, backless dress and bossing Edward around –
behaviour he seems to have loved.
I think he longed for the moment of forgiveness, which probably happened later
in the bedroom.
It’s clear in that film that Wallis – the brash American who
always had a wisecrack at the ready – represented danger for other
women.
In Britain in 1936, a woman could only get a divorce by proving her
husband’s adultery. If she was an adulterer, too, the divorce would not be
allowed.
Yet women were terrified that if divorce laws were relaxed, husbands all over
the country would abandon their ill-prepared wives, very few of whom had
jobs or money.

So they resented the idea of Wallis being allowed to ditch two husbands so
easily. Not surprisingly, the Duke and Duchess of York – Edward’s
younger brother Bertie and his wife Elizabeth (our future Queen Mother),
with their perfectly dressed little girls – represented the perfect
family in contrast to Wallis, the sexually liberated, independent and
childless woman, who spent money on clothes not curtains. A home wrecker not
a home maker.
So when the frumpy Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth and her husband, the
stammering Bertie, George VI, it was more important than ever to insist that
Wallis must not be given royal initials – HRH.
Without them the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were effectively exiled because
the Duke refused to return home and face the insult of nobody curtseying to
his non-royal wife.
In this way the new King and Queen were not threatened with constant
comparisons between a glamorous couple where the husband had charm, charisma
and a dashing smile and the wife wore impeccable couture clothes.

After the Queen Mother’s death in 2002, documents were released which revealed
not only that she loathed Wallis but how all the Royal Family thought her
“the lowest of the low” – so common that they could not
call her by her name, simply “That Woman”.
But now, that image of a cold, hard, calculating woman who schemed at being
queen until her hopes were dashed, can finally be demolished. It is clear
the reality was dramatically different and she did not want to marry Edward
at all but was trapped, unable to escape as the King threatened suicide if
she did.
According to one version, Edward slept with a loaded pistol under his
pillow while another courtier reported that he had warned he might slit his
throat if Wallis left him.
During the research for my book, I have discovered an extraordinary cache of
never-before-seen letters between Wallis and the man she was divorcing –
her second husband Ernest Simpson, a US-born shipping executive who later
became a naturalised Brit – in which it is clear he was the man she
really loved.
While waiting in Felixstowe to appear at Ipswich Assizes for the first part of
her divorce hearing she wrote to Ernest: “Give me courage… I am so lonely.”
She blamed “stuffy British minds” for the situation she was in but also told
Ernest: “I can never forgive my own country for what they have done to the
King and myself.”

It was the US Press that broke the story and Wallis received poison pen
letters and bomb threats and found herself a prisoner in her own home.
Far from being the confident woman pushing for marriage, Wallis was
terrified for her life but could not find a way out.
She missed Ernest desperately and while waiting for the second part of her
divorce to come through wrote: “I wake up in the night sometimes and think I
must be lying on that strange chaise longue and hear your footsteps coming
down the passage of the flat…
“I can’t believe that such a thing could have happened to two people who got
along so well. At least it never should have.”
Ernest offered her a deep, companionable kind of love and security which she
realised too late was what she really craved in life.
In these letters Ernest and Wallis poke fun at Edward, calling him Peter Pan
or the boy who would never grow up. Wallis calls some of his ideas “Peter
Pan plans”.
Edward was like a troublesome son for Wallis and she treated him as a bossy
mother would.
It is now clear Edward was underdeveloped – and not only physically.
Previous girlfriends had called him “the little man” implying that one
crucial part of his anatomy was small.
Wallis, it has always been said, applied the tricks she had picked up in
China to help him achieve sexual satisfaction.

As part of the recent, more sympathetic interpretation of Wallis, one theory
suggests she may have been born with some degree of disorder of sexual
development (DSD), an umbrella term which embraces a wide range of
conditions including chromosomal abnormality or perhaps having no womb. If
this is the case – and there is no proof – it would account
for her ability to lead a sexually liberated life without fear of getting
pregnant.
It also means her typical DSD personality required her to be flirtatious to
confirm that, even though she could not conceive, she was still attractive
to men.
But now there is evidence that Edward was emotionally undeveloped too and
probably not fit to be king, especially in the late 1930s when Europe faced
a battle to survive against Hitler.
The new letters reveal that Wallis not only recognised this but, far from
pushing to marry this man, she desperately tried to avoid what began to
appear a life sentence.
To the outside world, Wallis had got her man. But she was in fact weak, lonely
and terrified.
“I am very sad,” she admitted to Ernest in December 1936. And, as the handful
of guests could see, she looked anything but triumphant on her wedding day
and continued to write to Ernest.
I have yet to see the film W.E. but it will be interesting to see how Madonna,
as director, portrays Wallis, who is played by Andrea Riseborough.
Will she be a strong figure in control of her destiny? Or a vulnerable
woman who played with fire – and got burned.

Kim Kardashian verklagt Onlineportal
